Colorful Foods Including Whole Grains Can Optimize Your Diet
The most nutritious foods in nature are the most multi-colored foods. Orange, red, green, purple and even brown foods offer the supreme dietetic value. There are barely any foods that are ”white” that proffer high nutrition. Cauliflower and jicama are both white and healthful but the majority of white foods, principally white flour and white rice are nutritionally void.
Many years ago, the mass of breads and flour products were made with the highly nutritious flour that was made from the whole grain. This included the entire seed, the fiber-rich outside bran layer and the germ. However, in an effort to make flour last longer, white flour was developed. Whole grain flour tends to spoil more rapidly and it can also attract a bug called a weevil that will eat it up.
So white flour that was made from only the endosperm of the grain seed was developed. This flour is as you would expect white but it is also frequently bleached with chemicals in order to make it even whiter. It is very fascinating to note that white flour is also a natural insecticide. It will not invite weevils or any other bug. Insects cannot survive on a diet of white flour because if does not have enough food value.
White flour became a important hit. Many people enjoyed the appealing white bread that it made and the fluffiness of the baked goods. However, not long after that it was revealed that this pretty white flour no longer provided any dietary value. At that point, the flour was enriched with 4 vitamins and minerals. However, in the processing 15 vitamins and minerals had been lost along with all of the roughage. None of the roughage was put back in.
It is unfortunate but even today the bulk of the breads and baked goods on our store shelves is made from this nutritionally empty flour. Even the so-called ”wheat” breads often list enriched flour as the chief ingredient. If you want to get the highest nutritional value from breads and baked products you need to make sure that the first ingredient listed on the label is not enriched flour but whole grain flour.
White foods tend to be void of the major nutrients. The more processed a food is the less healthful it tends to be. White rice is similar to white flour in its nutritional value. In order to receive the uppermost dietetic value you need to look for whole grain foods and foods that are prepared from whole grains are never white but rather they are shades of brown.
Multi-colored foods are imperative when it comes to nutrition. Purple fruits and vegetables offer essential antioxidants including anthocyanins and resveratrol. Orange vegetables and fruits offer beta-carotene and the green vegetables and fruits provide a healthful array of essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. The most wholesome diets are the most colorful diets.
In order to maximize your nutrients, have multi-colored foods and get rid of all white foods with the exclusion of cauliflower and jicama. Include some lean protein sources such like fish, poultry or lean meats or if you are a vegetarian make sure and include different beans and legumes for vegetarian protein. And make sure that the bread that you eat is prepared from whole grain flours and not enriched flours.
