Five Signs to Know Your Diet Plan Will Last
Most people want to follow a diet plan at some point so that they can lose weight and become their ideal weight, but most of them don’t work for the long-term. Why? Because most people don’t change their lifestyles; instead, they follow a “diet” for the short term, in hopes of losing weight. It almost never works, because it doesn’t translate into lifelong commitment. To find something that really works for you, you’ll need to be able to do “forever.” While a new diet plan can be exciting to start, if it’s not something you like and can stay with over the long term, that excitement is going to fade really quickly.
Look for these five things in a diet plan to make sure it’s going to work for you.
1. You Love Your Diet Plan – Want to know if your new healthy diet plan will last? Ask yourself, “Do I love this plan?” If you’re excited about your daily food choices and how much you get to eat, you probably will remain on your diet for a long time.
However, if you have to force yourself to eat the foods associated with your diet, your plan will probably fail explicably. It’s almost impossible to consistently do something you despise. The secret is to either change your desires, or find a plan that reasonably supports your desires
2. The Main Environment You’re in Supports Your Choices – If you live in an environment that supports your food choices and your diet, it’s a lot easier to stay on it and not stray. For example, if you’ve decided to become a vegetarian, it’s going to be difficult (though certainly possible) to remain focused on excluding meat from your diet; at the very least, those people should be supportive of the fact that you are vegetarian and not constantly tempt you with meat.
However, if everyone I knew ate snacks and fried foods all day, everyday, it would be very difficult for me to stay on track. Not impossible, but difficult. The key here is to find friends, family members, or associates who support your diet so you can create an environment where your diet plan can flourish.
3. Your Diet Rewards You – Let’s face it; we like to be rewarded, and we need to see at least daily or weekly benefits from our diets to continue them.
Of course, one possible benefit from this is losing weight, but you’ll also have to be truly enjoying your diet at the same time. It’s going to have to make you feel better or give you more energy, for example, so that you remain motivated to stay on it. Other benefits may include that you don’t just lose the weight, but also maintain it easily once you’ve lost enough weight, as well as having more energy, better physical health, and so on. If you want to continue on your diet uninterrupted, you’ll need to see benefit from it, regularly.
4. Your Plan Includes Exercise – Every day, in some form, you should be working out in some capacity; this will give you weight loss benefits (if that’s what you’re looking for) at a faster rate, but it’s also going to make you feel better and will help you stay on track. This can keep you motivated to continue with your particular plan.
5. Your Diet Includes Personal Goals – Last, but never least, is setting goals. Your diet plan needs to be centered around your goals. Goals give you something to aim for, and they also serve to motivate you into action.
For example, if you want to lose 50 pounds and get down to 150, that can be your first goal, and then maintenance at that weight can be your second goal. If you go too far off plan, you’re not going to be able to stay at that weight once you’re there. Keeping that goal in mind is going to help keep you on track.
Now you know the secret to developing a consistent diet plan. If your current diet doesn’t include the traits above you may want to make some changes. Do your research and find a permanent (doctor approved) diet plan that will work for you. Just having a written plan of what you can and cannot eat will go a long way in keeping you on track.
