About Drug Testing

The term ”drug testing” for many people just sounds so ominous and forbidding, and that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, because drug testing is associated with a lot of unsavory things, from hardened criminals to prostitutes to a life of decadence and debauchery, and nobody wants to be associated with that sort of thing. But the truth is drug testing is not just restricted to a particular type of people, and can be performed on absolutely everyone.

But thanks to the unsavory image of drug testing, people who have never used drugs in their entire lives tend to balk at the idea of undergoing a drug test, wondering why on Earth something like that would be used on them, especially if they don’t have a history of doing drugs. Such tests, however, are necessary for things like driver’s license and employee requirements, and have nothing to do with a person’s medical or drug history. In this particular instance, drug testing is more of a precautionary measure.

Drug testing has gone way beyond more than just screening people for driving and employment requirements. It has even extended to schools, where students can be sent it to undergo a drug testing. It’s a sad fact that more and more younger people are experimenting with banned substances, and drug testing merely serves to clear the path for students to get help before their drug use turns into a serious, life-threatening addiction. Because drug testing is used for this purpose, some people are crying foul and saying that it is an invasion of people’s privacy. The jury is still out on that contention, but generally, people agree that it is indeed better to be safe than sorry.

Of course, everybody knows that drug testing is typically done with athletes, who must constantly undergo it prior to a major sporting event or a competition. Using steroids or performance enhancers is strictly against the laws of athletic associations, and using them can merit athletes a lengthy ban from the sport. It can be discouraging to know that athletes do engage in them, casting doubt on the rest of the sport and their colleagues.

There are different drug testing methods being used nowadays, including urinalysis, blood testing, hair drug sampling, and saliva testing. Indeed, drug tests do have to be thorough and effective to be able to detect all amounts of drugs in the body, and as people get more creative with drug use, drug testing looks like it will never really fade out of use.
